Rivers crisis: Fubara orders audit of 23 LG accounts

By Seyi Babalola

Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers State, has ordered the state auditor general to begin auditing the 23 Local Government Areas’ financial records for the previous three years.

As the governor swore in the Local Government Areas’ Caretaker Committee Chairmen, he explained that the purpose of the process is to act as a check on the new authorities.

He asked the caretaker chairmen to defend the rights of their people and show that the government made the correct decision in choosing them, rather than viewing themselves as superheroes.

He emphasized that democracy is the source of the present occurrences.

According to Fubara, the opposition to tenure extension affects not just the state but the entire nation since if it is legalized in one state, it may spread to other states as well.

He made the argument that since caretaker committees oversee most states in the union, Rivers State was not acting in an unusual manner.

He did, however, issue a warning that their tenure would not be too lengthy, as local government elections would shortly be held.

He urged the officials to resolve the outgoing chairmen’s pay and benefits, cautioning against using violence and emphasizing that this is not his style.
