In line with its commitment to education and youth empowerment, Total Upstream Nigeria Limited (TUPNI), in partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and other joint venture partners, has announced the 2019/2020 edition of the NNPC/Total National Merit Scholarship Awards.
The program, held during Nigeria’s annual academic calendar, reaffirmed its reputation as one of the most competitive academic prizes for undergraduates nationwide.
The announcement came just weeks after Nigeria joined the global community to mark International Youth Day, underlining the importance of nurturing talent for national development.
Background of the Award

Candidates must pass through strict eligibility filters: proof of university admission, proof of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scores, and first- or second-year enrollment status. Applicants then sit for a competitive nationwide examination administered by an independent national body such as WAEC or its equivalent.
Those who emerge successful are awarded ₦150,000 annually for the duration of their studies, renewable only upon maintenance of a minimum CGPA of 2.5 on a 5-point scale.

• Engr. Mariam Adeola – A 2011 awardee from the University of Lagos, she built a career in energy project management, focusing on community electrification initiatives. • Samuel Eze – A 2012 recipient while studying Computer Engineering, Eze co-founded a Lagos-based fintech startup in 2017. By 2019, his firm had gained recognition in local tech circles for developing digital payment tools tailored to Nigerian SMEs.
• Dr. Olumide Popoola – Recognized with the scholarship in his undergraduate years at Obafemi Awolowo University, he pursued postgraduate work in Petroleum Engineering. By 2019, he was active as a consultant on West African energy projects, bridging technical expertise and local content development.
• Ngozi Okafor – A 2010 recipient from the University of Benin, she entered public service through the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Honors program and by 2019 was working with an NGO on youth entrepreneurship training across Edo and Delta States.
