The Human Rights Defenders (HURIDE) in Ebonyi State, has cautioned against growing wave of allegations and personal attacks directed at the state Commissioner of Police, Hope Urunwa Okafor.
The commissioner has reportedly faced allegations bordering on bail payments involving over ₦3 million, alleged personal relationships with political figures, an administrative transfer issue, and claims of imposing weekly levies on heads of units and departments in the state police command.
HURIDE, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr. Sampson Oko Nweke, said it was concerned that, despite the seriousness of the claims, individuals who have reportedly been questioned have not presented convincing evidence to substantiate their allegations.

“We, therefore, urge the public not to mistake repeated accusations for established facts. While every public officer must remain accountable, accountability must be pursued through credible evidence, lawful procedures, and impartial investigation, not rumours, character assassination, or political vendettas. Any suggestion that political interests are behind these attacks must also be established by evidence rather than speculation.
“We call on anyone with verifiable evidence of misconduct to present it to the appropriate authorities. Equally, we urge the media and the public to exercise restraint and avoid spreading unsubstantiated claims capable of damaging reputations and undermining public confidence in institutions.
“HURIDE does not support impunity, nor does it endorse the persecution of any public officer through allegations that cannot be substantiated. Our position is guided by fairness, justice, human rights, and the rule of law.
“The Commissioner of Police, like every other public official, deserves a fair hearing and the presumption of innocence where allegations remain unproven. Let evidence, not political hostility or public speculation, determine the truth”, he said.
