National coordinator of Awareness Group, Hamzat Araoye Balogun, has called on the Federal government to revive the moribund steel industries in the country.
He made the appeal when he addressed union leaders in Sango Ota, Ogun State.
The steel companies are Aladja Steel Company in Delta State, Ajaokuta Steel Company in Kogi State, Osogbo Rolling Mill in Osun State and others.
He said the industries were established to cater for the needs of the country by Alhaji Shehu Shagari administration in order to reduce overdependence on foreign importation and to reduce other steel raw materials for the country to have enough steel for construction and manufacturing companies. They were equally established with the aim of exporting the products to West African countries and making the country self-sufficient in steel production.
The companies, if resuscitated, would provide jobs to thousands of Nigerians, who are engineers and professionals in other fields.
The coordinator appealed to the present administration led by President Bola Tinubu to expedite action to bring the industries back to life and probe the former administrations in order to retrieve money paid to resuscitate the gigantic companies.
