Chairman of the League of Patriotic Lawyers, Abubakar Yesufu, has cautioned against what he described as abuse of court process in the retirement of 455 policemen, saying they were not due for retirement.

He said those who retired were high-ranking officers, including an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Idowu Owohunwa and a Deputy Commissioner of Police, Simon Lough, on January 1, 2025.

The League gave the warning at a press briefing yesterday on Saturday.

It advised the courts not to be used as cannon fodders by those it described as unscrupulous elements or non-governmental agents to settle scores.

He wondered why the court relied on an ex-parte application to settle a fundamental issue of law that all parties ought to be put on notice.

The league further contended that a crippling fine ought to be imposed on the plaintiff that deceived the court.

Yesufu further averred that ex-parte orders were meant to settle cases and not to alter the subject matter.

The league also urged the police high command to respect the subsisting court order that reinstated the police officers.

He also stated that the affected policemen should be allowed to continue with their orientation pending the posting to their various states.

“To us in the League, we remain a watchdog in society and would not hesitate to call out any group or organisation that is found to breach the law,” he noted.

He stated that a five-man committee had been set up to determine the culpability of anyone and present its report in seven days.
