There was palpable panic among residents as a hospital building collapsed in Calabar, Cross River State on Thursday.
It was learnt that the building caved in due to a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall and soil erosion.
Amateur footage of the collapse circulated on X early Friday.
The video captured the moment the hospital building, identified as UNICEM Hospital, dangled precariously after the ground beneath it had been washed away before crashing into the gully below.
The Cross River State Government has not officially reacted to the incident.
However, many netizens took to X to share their opinions on the collapse.
Samuel Ekene said, “Can we all see how strong that building was? If it was new age building, everything would have caved in at once.”
Henry Uba said, “The engineer really did a great work. That foundation tried. But guess what would happen to Nigeria if we were to have an earthquake even if it’s a magnitude 3.0.”
@edak_ephraim said, “The signs were there but they didn’t care to do anything about it. I saw multiple videos on Facebook before this collapse.”
Oluchi Glory wrote, “Something that could be easily prevented if the building control bodies there come together and introduce a well compacted retaining /erosion control wall. Investment all gone.”
