Reps probe alleged abuse of peace keeping operations

Reps-2-1

From Ndubuisi Orji, Abuja

House of Representatives is to investigate alleged abused and mismanagement of proceeds of peace keeping operations from 2010 to 2022.

The House, yesterday, constitute an Ad-hoc Committee to undertake the probe  and  report back to  it within four weeks for further legislative action.

This followed the adoption of a motion by Zakaria Nyampa on the need to investigate alleged abuse of peace keeping operations and mismanagement of its proceeds and funds.

Nyampa stated that peace keeping operations among countries  play a critical role  in stabilising fragile countries like Nigeria, as well as prevent vulnerable regions from becoming terrorist safe havens.

Nevertheless, the lawmaker said it was  disturbing that “the proceeds of peace keeping operation has never featured as source of revenue in the national budget nor captured in the Medium Term Expenditures Framework(MTEF)” usually presented to the parliament by previous administration in the country.

According to him, the mismanagement of the proceeds of peace keeping operation in Nigeria has reached a point where all the parties involved need to account for the spending.

“If this practice of non-inclusion of proceeds of Peace Keeping operations in the budgets and Medium Term Expenditures Framework and poor accountability of funds is not stoped , nation building will be meaningless.”
