A member of the House of Representatives, Leke Abejide, has initiated moves to empower and mobilise one million Yoruba residents across the 44 local government areas of Kano State.
Abejide, who represents Yagba East/Yagba West/Mopa-Muro Federal Constituency of Kogi State, said the initiative was also aimed at mobilising support for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu.
The lawmaker disclosed this at the palace of the Oba of Yoruba in Kano shortly after unveiling a 27-member committee to coordinate the empowerment and mobilisation programme across the state.
He said the initiative would target widows, vulnerable and less privileged persons, youths, women, artisans, entrepreneurs and other categories of Yoruba residents in Kano.
Abejide charged members of the committee to ensure transparency and fairness in the implementation of the programme, stressing that its success would depend largely on their ability to reach the intended beneficiaries.

He said the initiative was designed to combine economic empowerment with grassroots political participation ahead of the 2027 election.
The lawmaker also said his relationship with Kano State went beyond politics, describing the state as a place where he had lived, done business and built lasting relationships.
Abejide, who had previously spoken publicly about his longstanding ties to Kano, said those experiences had strengthened his relationship with the Yoruba community and other residents of the state.
Coordinator of the committee, Seyi Olorunsola, assured that members would work collectively to achieve the objectives of the assignment.
He commended Abejide for the initiative, saying the programme would engage Yoruba residents across Kano State, strengthen community participation and provide economic support to families, particularly widows and other vulnerable groups.
Olorunsola said the committee would work to ensure that the programme reached the targeted beneficiaries across the 44 local government areas.
