The Rivers State caucus in the House of Representatives has charged the leadership to call the chairman, House Committee on Petroleum ( Downstream), Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere to order over his comments on the political crisis in the state.
The caucus, in a statement by its leader, Dumnamene Dekor, said Ugochinyere, who doubles as the spokesman of the G-60, an opposition coalition in the House, has no locus to intervene in the issues in Rivers State, especially as it is not before the House.
Ugochinyere, at a press conference, on Tuesday, waded into the controversy over the tenure of local government chairmen in Rivers State, while calling for sanctions against the immediate past council bosses, who insist that their tenure has not elapsed.
However, the Rivers lawmakers said the comments of G-60 spokesman was an infringement on their privileges, as well as an alleged violation of the Constitution.
According to them,”the situation in Rivers State does not concern Hon. Ugochinyere in any way, because he is from Imo State; a state that is grappling with myriad political and social issues of its own in respect of which Hon. Ugochinyere cannot find his voice.
“The disagreement in Rivers has never been brought to the floor of the House of Representatives to warrant other members’ intervention in a debate.
“Unarguably, Hon. Ugochinyere’s actions (in the guise of representation) outside of the House impinge on the privileges of members of this Caucus, the integrity of the House itself, and constitute a reckless violation of the constitution vide sections 49 and 72.”
