The Chairman of the House Committee on the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Engr Aderemi Oseni, has called on contractors to strictly follow project specifications, highlighting substandard work as a key contributor to road failures across Nigeria.
Speaking at the Oyo Federal Roads Stakeholders Engagement over the weekend, a forum organised by the House of Representatives Committee on Works, Oseni, who represents the Ibarapa East/Ido Federal Constituency, emphasised the importance of professionalism and quality delivery in road construction.
While acknowledging that overloading contributes to road deterioration, Oseni pointed out that the root cause lies in contractors’ failure to adhere to approved designs.
“Not all road failures result from overloading; poor workmanship by some contractors is a major factor. If roads are constructed according to specifications, maintenance costs will drop significantly, and our infrastructure will be more durable,” he stated.

Oseni commended the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Tajudeen Abbas, for granting Oyo State a significant role in road infrastructure development by appointing lawmakers from the state as chairmen of both the House Committees on Works and FERMA.
He also praised the Minister of Works, Engr David Umahi, for his innovative approach to road infrastructure management, noting visible improvements across the country.
“We are witnessing a shift from the past, with notable improvements in our road infrastructure. These reforms must be maximised to benefit both our state and the nation,” Oseni added.
The lawmaker further applauded President Bola Tinubu for implementing reforms that are progressively yielding positive results across various sectors.
“Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is committed to addressing Nigeria’s challenges. His focus on road infrastructure development reflects that dedication,” Oseni remarked.
