Global digital remittance company Remitly has appointed Oghenerukevwe Toka as Senior Marketing Manager for Africa, as the fintech firm expands its services across several major remittance corridors linking Africa with Europe and North America.

The company said the appointment forms part of its broader growth strategy across the continent, where rising migration flows and increased smartphone adoption are accelerating demand for digital cross-border money transfers.

Remitly currently operates in more than 170 countries, with African remittance corridors among its fastest-growing markets.

Toka brings more than a decade of experience in consumer marketing, behavioural insights, and digital growth strategy. Over the course of his career he has worked with multinational companies including Heineken, Unilever, Coca-Cola, and Visa, where he led initiatives combining consumer analytics, digital engagement, and data-driven marketing to support brand expansion across several African markets.

Industry observers say that background makes him particularly suited to the remittance sector, where understanding diaspora behaviour, cultural nuance, and patterns of digital adoption is critical to customer acquisition and retention.

According to Remitly officials, Toka’s ability to translate behavioural data into practical commercial strategy was a key factor in his appointment. Across previous roles in consumer goods and payments, his work has focused on analysing consumer decision-making, segmenting audiences, and designing data-driven marketing frameworks that convert behavioural insights into targeted campaigns and effective product positioning.

Company officials say he has already contributed to Remitly’s Africa expansion by helping refine localisation strategies for diaspora audiences. Drawing on insights from consumer research across both sending and receiving markets, this work has supported more targeted campaign planning and customer engagement across several African high-volume remittance corridors.

Industry analysts say the appointment reflects a broader trend among fintech firms operating in emerging markets, where companies are increasingly relying on consumer insight and behavioural analytics to attract diaspora users.

“His background comes from sectors where understanding human behaviour determines commercial success,” said one analyst who tracks fintech expansion in emerging markets. “Whether analysing why shoppers choose certain brands or how people adopt digital payments, he consistently turns behavioural insight into strategy. That perspective is particularly valuable for cross-border financial services.”

Remitly said Toka’s responsibilities include overseeing localisation and growth strategies for African markets, managing customer insight programmes, and coordinating integrated marketing campaigns across multiple regions.

As digital remittance platforms compete with traditional money transfer channels, companies are placing greater emphasis on trust, cultural nuance, and data-driven engagement, particularly in African markets where informal transfer systems have historically played a significant role.

Toka said his new role builds on lessons learned across several sectors. “Every market I’ve worked in has reinforced the importance of understanding how people make decisions,” he said. “Applying that understanding to remittances, which directly affect families and livelihoods, is a meaningful next step.”
