First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for stronger ties between Africans on the continent and the diaspora, saying preservation of the continent’s cultural heritage must go hand-in-hand with greater investment in education, empowerment and the well-being of its people.
Mrs Tinubu said Africans must be deliberate about safeguarding their identity and cultural values while strengthening bonds among people of African descent across the world.
She made the call in a message marking the 2026 International Day for People of African Descent, commemorated on August 31 with the theme, “People of African Descent: Recognition, Justice, and Development.”
“As Africans, we must continue to preserve our rich cultural heritage, strengthen unity across the continent and the diaspora, and invest in the education, empowerment, and well-being of our people,” she said.

According to the First Lady, the commemoration provides an opportunity not only to celebrate Africa’s rich heritage but also to acknowledge the contributions of people of African descent to human progress.
“Today, as we commemorate the International Day for People of African Descent 2026, we celebrate the rich heritage and remarkable contributions of people of African descent to the progress of humanity,” she said.
Mrs Tinubu said the occasion should equally draw attention to the continuing need to protect human rights and create opportunities that enable people to fulfil their potential.
“This day also serves as a reminder of the need to renew our collective commitment to protecting human rights and creating opportunities for every individual to realise their full potential,” she said.
She congratulated people of African descent across the world on the occasion and wished them a memorable celebration.
