Rector decries N4bn debt at Nekede Poly

Federal-Polytechnic-Nekede

From Stanley Uzoaru, Owerri

Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede Owerri, Dr. Basilia Igbokwe has disclosed that she inherited a N4 billion debt when she assumed office.

While addressing a press conference to herald her first year anniversary at the institution, Igbokwe also lamented unpaid staff salaries, contractors’ claims, dilapidated students hostels and neglect of welfare of staff as daunted challenges before her.

Despite the challenges she emphasised that the institution thrived under her eleven point transformative agenda.

She said “In the last one year, I have made significant strides as the 9th substantive Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, transforming the institution into a hub of academic excellence and innovation.”

She highlighted some of her achievements to include academic excellence, infrastructural modernisation, digital innovation, students welfare, security, research and development, community engagement, and staff development among others.

“Today I’m proud to report that we have made significant strides in addressing the challenges facing our institution. We have cleared a significant portion of the debt profile and paid staff claims, settled contractors.

“We have revitalised the internal revenue generation units, renovated student hostels and our graduates are now being mobilised for NYSC. We have also improved staff welfare leading to improved motivation and attitude to work,” Igbokwe stated.

Highlights of the anniversary was a thanksgiving service, solemn assembly carol and award presentation to deserving staff and students of the institution.
