A former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Kanu Agabi, SAN, has warned that Nigeria risks betraying future generations if anti-graft and security agencies fail to intensify the recovery of stolen national wealth.

Speaking in Abuja, Agabi stated that repatriating looted funds is a strict generational obligation.

“We must repatriate our looted funds or we have failed as a generation,” he said.

Agabi urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS) to sustain the pressure on asset recovery to restore public confidence.

The legal icon spoke at the public presentation of two books authored by a retired judge, Alaba Omolaye-Ajileyez titled: ‘Electronic Evidence (Second Edition) and A Compendium of Cases on Electronic Evidence (Volume II)’.

The event, which featured the launch of an educational foundation for indigent students, was chaired by former Chairman of the Body of Benchers, Wole Olanipekun, SAN.

In response, EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, described financial crimes as a massive threat fueling national insecurity and economic hardship.

He revealed that the commission recently secured convictions against a former minister and several foreign nationals involved in money laundering.

Olukoyede noted that the EFCC has deployed Artificial intelligence (AI) to strengthen its investigations, and urged lawmakers to update legal frameworks regarding digital evidence.

Agabi praised Justice Omolaye-Ajileye’s decades of unblemished integrity in the judiciary. He called on judicial officers to collectively defend the institution’s image, questioned the practice of retiring highly experienced judges who are still capable of service, and suggested they be retained in advisory or legislative capacities.

He urged lawyers to commit to continuous legal education to stay relevant in a fast-evolving technological landscape.
