Real Madrid delivered a commanding performance on Wednesday night, defeating Manchester City 3–0 in their UEFA Champions League clash, with Federico Valverde scoring a stunning hat-trick to put the Spanish giants firmly in control of the tie.

The Uruguayan midfielder produced a clinical first-half display at the Santiago Bernabéu, striking three times to leave the Premier League champions struggling to recover.

Valverde opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a powerful finish after a swift attacking move by Madrid. Just seven minutes later, he doubled the lead with another well-taken effort that beat City’s goalkeeper and sent the home crowd into celebration.

Manchester City attempted to respond by pushing forward and controlling possession, but they found it difficult to break through Real Madrid’s organised defence.

Valverde completed his memorable night shortly before halftime, finishing off another fast attack to secure his hat-trick and give Madrid a comfortable 3–0 advantage.

In the second half, Real Madrid continued to threaten on the counter-attack and even had the chance to extend their lead, but Vinícius Júnior failed to convert from the penalty spot.

Pep Guardiola’s side tried to mount a comeback with efforts from Jeremy Doku and Nico O’Reilly, but were repeatedly denied by Madrid’s solid defending, marshalled by Antonio Rüdiger and Aurélien Tchouaméni, and held firm.

The result gives Real Madrid a strong advantage ahead of the second leg at the Etihad Stadium, while Manchester City now face a tough task if they hope to overturn the deficit and keep their Champions League hopes alive.
