Roberto Martinez and Cristiano Ronaldo after the match against Slovenia

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has stated that captain Cristiano Ronaldo taught his squad a lesson during their Euro 2024 victory over Slovenia on Monday.

Recall that Ronaldo burst into tears when goalie Jan Oblak saved his penalty in the opening half of extra time.

The Al Nassr attacker then took the opening shot of the shootout for Portugal.

The 39-year-old managed to beat Oblak with an effort into the opposite corner. The penalty shootout concluded 3-0, propelling Portugal to the last eight.

“He [Ronaldo] doesn’t need to care that much and that’s why I thank him for being the way he is, for caring for the group … I was certain he had to be the first penalty taker and show us the way to the victory,” Martinez said at his post-match interview.

“I think we all felt very proud of our captain. The dressing room was delighted with what he is doing. I think he gave us all a lesson, that you need to live every day as if it is the last one.”
