The protests, which commenced on August 1 across several cities, were aimed at highlighting the severe economic challenges Nigerians face, including a staggering 34 percent inflation rate that has made basic necessities unaffordable for many households.
Despite appeals from authorities and religious leaders to end the demonstrations after two days, the protesters remained resolute. While the morning saw a small turnout, the number of participants increased as the day progressed.
Carrying placards with various messages, the protesters voiced their demands, including the reversal of the recent fuel subsidy removal. They chanted slogans, expressing frustration over what they perceived as governmental insensitivity to the struggles of ordinary Nigerians, especially in the light of the naira’s historic devaluation.
Police officers were present at the rally to ensure order, and economic activities continued as usual in the area.
