The ‘Occupy National Assembly’ protest over the electronic transmission of election results started in Abuja on Monday.

The protest is organised by members of civil society organisations, a handful of opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) members, and some women’s groups against the removal of real-time transmission of electoral results, as opposed to by the Nigerian Senators.

As of the time of this report, groups had gathered at the entrance to the National Assembly for the protest.

There is also a heavy security presence of personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps at the scene.

The protesters have insisted that lawmakers must state clearly that “real-time electronic transmission” be included in the proposed Electoral Act.
