Prof. Cyril Onwumechili, former Vice Chancellor of University of Ife, is to be buried on Friday, August 18.
Born on January 20, 1932, in Inyi, Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State, Onwumechili earned his Ph.D in Physics from University College, Ibadan. His contributions extended to leadership roles in academia, including Dean of Physical Sciences at University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Vice Chancellor of University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), and President of Anambra State University of Technology. He was also former President Nigeria Academy of Science.
According to the schedule of funeral rites by his first son, Prof Chuka Onwumechili, there would be a vigil Mass at his compound in Agbo-Ozegu, Enugwu Inyi on Thursday, August 17; while on Friday, August 18, there would be a funeral Mass by 10am at Holy Ghost Parish, Enugwu Inyi, followed by interment at his compound; Saturday, August 19, condolence day (in-laws/friends) and Sunday, August 20, thanksgiving Mass at Holy Ghost Parish Enugu Inyi.
A devoted family man, he is survived by his loving wife, Cecilia Bedeaka Onwumechili, three children, Dr. (Mrs) Chibugo Okoli, Prof. Chuka Onwumechili and Barr. Anayo Onwumechili, grandchildren, and other relatives.
