The Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University has announced the appointment of Professor Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie as its new substantive Vice-Chancellor, effective Tuesday, November 18, 2025.
The appointment was approved by the university’s Governing Council for a single tenure of five years.
The appointment of Professor Anyaehie, a renowned professor of Physiology and Clinical Measurements, was announced by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Barr. Monsur Olugbenga Kukoyi.
The Council Chairman shortly before the announcement stated that the council was resolute in its task of completing the process following the due process of the law and regulations guiding the appointment of vice-chancellor in accordance with the Universities Miscellaneous Act and Nnamdi Azikiwe University Statutes.
He disclosed that out of the three shortlisted candidates—Prof Bond Anyaehie came tops beating Prof Joseph Ikechebelu and Prof. Emeka Ezeonu.

Prof Bond Anyaehie until his appointment was a former Provost, College of Medicine, Imo State University. He was also former Deputy Provost, College of Medical Science, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu.
He hails from Umuchukwu Village, Nkwerre, Imo State and shares the same birthday of Nov. 16 with the Great Nnamdi Azikiwe whom the University was named after. Coincidentally, his appointment as UNIZIK VC also took place on his birthday.
In a short acceptance speech, the newly appointed vice-chancellor pledged to work closely with the governing council and to ensure that UNIZIK ranks among the best universities in Nigeria.
“I’ve always felt universities can be better and God has given me the opportunity to make one better. This is one I feel aligned with and each time I pass here, I remember the great ZIK. Incidentally, the great Zik founded my university, University of Nigeria. Nnamdi Azikiwe University should be the best and I can guarantee you here today is that we will start work immediately and within six months, the ranking will move to the first 10 in Nigeria while we look forward to making it the best,” he said.
He will take over from Professor Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, whose tenure as Acting Vice-Chancellor ends on November 18, 2025.
