Private sector investment in education crucial to national development – FG

The federal government has described private sector investment in the educational sector as crucial to national development.

Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Adeladan Olarinre, stated this at the MTN award ceremony of 368 high-performing students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines in Abuja.

Some of the scholars included the 10 exceptional high scorers in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination as well as blind students in public tertiary institutions across the country. The awardees also received N300,000 annual grants.

Olarinre praised MTN Foundation for its sustained investment in education.

Represented by the Director of E-Governance of the ministry, Johnson Bareiye, he described the initiative as a model for private-sector participation in national development.

Olarinre said: “Today’s ceremony by the MTN Foundation stands as a reminder of what is possible when the private sector invests meaningfully in the future of our nation.

“As a ministry, we recognise education and digital skills as the foundation of our nation’s digital transformation journey, and we commend the MTN Foundation for its sustained commitment to empowering students and strengthening human capital development in Nigeria.”

Also, Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, also applauded the Foundation’s impact over the years in the educational sector.

Represented by the Deputy Director, Entrepreneurship Development, NYSC, Delphina Eze, he said: “This investment and the reward of over 14,000 scholarships to date stand as a testament to your deep commitment to building a knowledge-driven nation.

“We are particularly excited about the proposed integration of the MTN Skills Academy E-learning platform into the NYSC programme.”

He tasked the organisation to maintain in assisting top-performing students in their academic excellence.
