The Presidency has tasked the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike to urgently address the deteriorating waste management and collection situation in Abuja.
In a tweet, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi highlighted the pressing sanitation challenge affecting the capital city, emphasising the need for immediate action to prevent escalating public health risks.
Ajayi wrote on his verified X handle @TheTope_Ajayi, “My own Matter of Particular Concern (MPC) is the state of waste management and disposal in Abuja. Something has certainly broken with waste management and collection in Abuja that requires urgent fixing. Refuse is taking over the city. Minister Wike should pay immediate attention to this. We salute his work in expanding road infrastructure and restarting many abandoned road projects and bridges. The Minister must now avert public health crisis with heaps of refuse taking over public spaces.”
The call to action coincided with Thursday’s Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) executive council meeting chaired by Minister Wike, where a new waste management regime was unveiled to revamp Abuja’s sanitation. Scheduled to begin Monday, November 17, 2025, the programme aims to overhaul waste collection, disposal systems, and the overall cleanliness landscape of the city.
Coordinator of the Abuja Municipal Management Council (AMMC), Felix Obuah, spoke at the media briefing after the meeting. He revealed that the Executive Committee had authorised new contractors to take over waste management operations throughout the FCT. “By Monday, the 17th of November, the new contractors will take up the waste collection and management of FCT. Many people have complained about the waste being disposed here and there, but by the special grace of God, with this approval, you will see a clean Abuja,” Obuah stated.
