The Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese Rt. Rev. Samuel Ike, has urged Nigerians to use the Lenten season to pray for Nigeria to recover from its economic challenges.
In his message in Enugu, the cleric noted that Nigeria was blessed above most nations given its mineral resources and human capacity but failed to harness its potential.
“This is the best season to pray for our nation to recover and come to its status that God has meant it to be and be a blessing to other nations of the world,” he said.
The bishop also called on Nigerians to pray and fast when they are in danger for God’s intervention.
“Lenten season calls for fasting and true repentance. We should fast for our present situation and when we are in danger, siege of unknown gunmen, kidnappers, Boko Haram and bandits.
“Gay and homosexual are publicly devaluing everything that marriage and family life system stand for. This is because we are in danger of erosion of our moral values and fabric that hold us together.”
Admitting that the society was going away from its true values, Ike urged for prayer to break the chains of idolatry, spiritual conflict, as well as rescuing the youths who were increasingly faced with the challenges of social media and peer pressure.

“We should be desperate for the souls of our youths who see the church as a scam and think that the best and fastest way of making money is just what they are looking for with no sweat.
“We should also be desperate for our elders who have lost direction for God to rebirth us back again unto him.
“This is the best season to pray for the church to give a true revival of being obedient to the word of God. We call for repentance from every sin, not just hypocritical worship,” he said.
The bishop, however, explained that Ash Wednesday marked the beginning of lent in the Christian seasonal calendar.
“It is mostly marked in many christian churches in celebration of the holy communion of the Lord’s supper and imposition of ashes on the forehead which symbolically means that, “We are dust and unto dust we shall return.
“Lent was instituted to commemorate Jesus’ 40 days fast in the wilderness. It is 40 days of fasting before Easter and between Ash Wednesday and Easter are 46 days with six Sundays in between,” he said.
