The European side produced another assured display at the Estádio Nacional as head coach Roberto Martínez continued fine-tuning his squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Veteran captain Cristiano Ronaldo started the match and was heavily involved in Portugal’s attacking play before being withdrawn at halftime. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner thought he had given his side the lead in the opening half, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
Portugal dominated much of the first period and created several scoring opportunities. Rúben Dias came close with a powerful header that was brilliantly saved by Chile goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux, while Rafael Leão struck the woodwork as the hosts piled on the pressure.
The match took a dramatic turn when an altercation involving players from both teams resulted in red cards for Leão and Chile defender Iván Román, reducing both sides to ten men.
Despite the numerical setback, Portugal emerged strongly after the break and eventually found the breakthrough in the 58th minute. Substitute Gonçalo Guedes calmly finished after being played through by Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes later crowned an impressive individual performance with a goal of his own, curling a superb strike from outside the penalty area to double Portugal’s lead and put the result beyond doubt.
