Professor Umar Hamman Diram of the University of Maiduguri has urged political players to play the game by its rules so that it brings development to the people rather than dividing them along religious and ethnic lines.
Diram made the call in Gembu, Sardauna local government area of Taraba state while speaking as the guest speaker at the maiden National Congress of the Government Secondary School Gembu Old Students Association (GOSSGOSA).
The don observed that the people had lived in relative harmony with little emphasis on divisions that existed among them and had experienced steady growth and relative peace.
He however regretted that some politicians have used religion and ethnicity to create division among the people just to further their cause.
He urged the members to work hard to unite members of the community for common good irrespective of their ethnic and religious backgrounds.
Professor Diram also called for the intervention of the association in their almamata to ensure further training of teachers at the school that was established in 1972 and also conduct special classes for graduating students so that the quality of learning and teaching as well as discipline will be sustained.
Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court Lagos who was given an award as an outstanding contributor to GOSSGOSA 2022 in his remarks said that the association will unite to see how they can contribute to the growth of the school and the community at large.
Justice Buns who was one of Heads Boys of GSS Gembu and who graduated in 1980 urged members to maintain the unity that has existed over the years and called on those who are more privileged to reach out to and uplift others who were privileged for the common good.
Buba, who is also a pioneer lawyer and Federal High Court Judge from Mambila Plateau in Taraba, assured that the award excellence would spur him to do even more for the good of the school and the association so that the standard the school was known for will be sustained.
The Daily Sun reports that the meeting was attended by many old students who came from various parts of the country to reunite with their old classmates.
Many of them who are now traditional rulers, senior civil servants, captains of industry and renown technocrats attended the maiden meeting.
