From Okwe Obi, Abuja

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has claimed that some persons were paid to tarnish the reputation of the former governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

HURIWA’s National Coordinator Emmanuel Onwubiko, at a press briefing yesterday in Abuja, noted that the hirelings were motivated by unverified information that President Bola Tinubu was considering him for an appointment.

Onwubiko pointed out that there was nothing wrong with President Tinubu drafting competent hands, like Ugwuanyi, to drive home his Renewed Hope agenda.

According to him, Ugwuanyi made significant promises to the people of Enugu State, when he was the governor and lived up to many of them.

He said: “In recent times, we have received credible information and evidence pointing to the existence of powerful political forces that are exerting undue pressure on civil society organizations, the media, and other actors in Abuja and Lagos, with the intention of fabricating false scandals and launching a strategic media campaign to tarnish the image of Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

“These forces are motivated by ulterior motives and are seeking to smear his reputation. It is imperative that we bring this matter to the public’s attention to ensure transparency and uphold the principles of justice and fairness.

“Therefore, these sinister plots and politically motivated allegations against him are not only baseless but also part of a deliberate effort by certain individuals to tarnish his image.

“We believe that these individuals are acting out of self-interest and fear that Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi may be considered for a significant political appointment from President Tinubu.

“Their actions are driven by partisan politics and a desire to undermine a public servant who has earned the trust and respect of the people of Enugu State.”

He continued: “HURIWA stands for the protection of human rights, justice, and the rule of law.

“We believe in transparency and accountability, and we call on all stakeholders, including the media, civil society organizations, and the general public, to critically evaluate the information being disseminated by these individuals and their motives.

“We want to emphasize that every Nigerian is entitled to a fair and unbiased assessment of their character and conduct and that public figures like Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi should not be unfairly maligned or subjected to unwarranted character assassination.

“In conclusion, we urge the public to exercise discernment and critical thinking when faced with sensational and unverified claims against public figures.

“We also call on those engaging in this malicious campaign to reconsider their actions and focus on constructive dialogue and debate, rather than seeking to undermine the reputation of an individual who has dedicated himself to public service.

“HURIWA remains committed to promoting and defending human rights and justice in Nigeria. We will closely monitor this situation and will continue to advocate for transparency, fairness, and accountability in all aspects of our society.”
