Police uncover fake currency mint in Katsina, arrest suspects

Men of the Katsina State Police Command have uncovered a currency mint at Kasuwa quarters, Kankia Local Government Area of Katsina State, where fraudsters produce fake naira notes.

Parading ten of the suspects arrested in connection with the incident at a press briefing on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, said that the fraudsters specialised in defrauding unsuspecting members of the public using counterfeit currencies.

According to the PPRO, “nemesis caught up with the suspects when credible information about their activities in a house situated at Bakin Kasuwa quarters, Kankia Local Government Area, was received. “Promptly, detectives swung into action and succeeded in arresting the suspects.

“During a search conducted in the house, a bottle containing (some) liquid suspected to be mercury and 144 pieces of suspected counterfeit naira notes of N1,000 denomination were recovered in the their possession as they confessed to the commission of the offence. Investigation is ongoing.”

In a separate development, the command said its men also arrested four suspected kidnappers, members of a syndicate.

Aliyu said: “On different dates and times in the month of April 2023, the command succeeded in arresting four persons, members of a suspected notorious kidnap for ransom syndicate.

“The suspects conspired with three other suspects, now at large, to attack the residence of one Alhaji Sidi Usman, of Unguwar Rai village, Baure Local Government Area and kidnapped his wife along with her three-month-old baby.

“Upon receipt of the report, our detectives promptly swung into action and succeeded in tracking and arresting the suspects.

“In the course of the investigation, the suspects confessed to the commission of the offense, and three rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition were recovered in their possession.”
