A trader, identified as Ebere Chibuike, at the Naze timber market, Owerri, the Imo State capital, was  allegedly killed by a stray bullet from a police officer on Monday morning.

The incident, which has gone viral in social media, suggested that the man, who was in his shop, got hit by the bullet when some policemen came to arrest some traders in the market.

But reacting to the incident, the state police spokesman, Henry Okoye, denied the report, insisting that the act was not carried out by its men.

He said: “Information I gathered so far indicates it’s not the police that shot him. More so, the DPO in charge of the area has since been mobilised to the scene for on-the-spot analysis and discreet investigation.

However, the Command has yet to receive an official report from him. Once I receive it, I’ll relay, accordingly.
