Operatives of the Oyo State Police Command have arrested three suspected armed robbers and recovered a locally fabricated pistol and other dangerous items concealed in a school bag during an intelligence-led operation in Ibadan.
The arrest was made at about 12:30 p.m. on Monday, August 3, by officers of the Oluyole Divisional Headquarters during a routine stop-and-search operation around the Rhema Bridge axis of Oluyole, Ibadan.
According to a Tuesdsy night statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, the officers intercepted a Bajaj motorcycle conveying three suspicious individuals.
A search led to the recovery of a cut-to-size locally fabricated pistol and an axe concealed inside a black school bag in their possession.
The suspects were immediately taken into custody while the exhibits were recovered for investigation.
The police said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects are members of the Aiye and Eiye cult groups.
The statement said they also confessed to participating in a series of violent crimes, including armed robbery.
The command said it has intensified investigations to establish the full extent of their involvement in armed robbery, cult-related activities, and other criminal offences.
Efforts are also ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of their criminal network.
The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, commended the vigilance and professionalism of the operatives, noting that their proactive action prevented what could have culminated in violent criminal acts.
He reiterated the command’s resolve to sustain intelligence-led policing, robust visibility patrols, and strategic stop-and-search operations aimed at denying criminal elements the opportunity to operate within the state.
The command urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons or activities.
