The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a suspected cultist, 30-year-old Idris Obarayi, and recovered a locally made pistol and one live cartridge in Abeokuta.
The suspect was arrested by operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit on Tuesday, October 20, following a distress report about suspected gunfire and screams in the Oke Ago-Owu area at about 2:30 am.
In a Wednesday statement, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi said operatives promptly mobilised to the location, forcing the suspects to flee.
He said the firearm and ammunition were recovered during the pursuit.
According to the statement, sustained tracking and investigative efforts led to the arrest of Obarayi at his hideout in Ita Ogboni, Igbole, Abeokuta, at about 5:45 pm the same day.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly admitted to membership of the Aiye confraternity and claimed ownership of the recovered items,” the statement reads in part.
The command said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects and establish the full circumstances of the incident.
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the SWAT operatives for their prompt response and effective follow-up, reaffirming the command’s commitment to proactive policing.
He assured residents that credible information would continue to receive prompt attention and that operations to identify and apprehend the fleeing suspects would be sustained.
The command encouraged residents to go about their lawful activities and report suspicious incidents through appropriate police channels.
