The Nigeria Police Force has mourned Inspector Habila Mangai, who was struck down by a Mack truck driven by one Chisom Ajah along the Owerri–Okigwe Road in Imo State on April 18.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), DCP Anthony Placid said the incident occurred while the slain inspector was on lawful stop-and-search duty.

He said, “The late Inspector, who was attached to the Isiala Mbano Division, was performing his duty at Amaraku when he was knocked down by a Mack truck driven by one Chisom Ajah. He was immediately evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where he was confirmed dead by the attending medical personnel. His remains have since been deposited at the hospital mortuary.

“The driver of the vehicle and the truck have been taken into custody and handed over to the State Motor Traffic Department (SMTD), Owerri, for detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, commiserated with the family, colleagues, and the Imo State Police Command over the “painful” loss, and assured that the sacrifice of the deceased would not be in vain.

The police assured the public that a thorough investigation has been instituted to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, and that justice would be duly served in accordance with the law.

The force also urged motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic regulations, and maintain due care, particularly around police operational checkpoints and duty posts.
