A gunman yesterday ran out of luck as he was gunned down by security operatives while enforcing sit-at-home in Okposi and Uburu communities of Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Daily Sun gathered that the victim was among the gunmen numbering over 20, who raided Okposi, Uburu and Onicha Igboeze in Onicha local government area of the state yesterday.
Sources in the area told Daily Sun that the gunmen attacked Court Area in Okposi, where they destroyed people’s businesses and property before moving to Uburu. It was gathered that after causing mayhem in Uburu, the gunmen moved to Onicha Igboeze, where they chased away motorcyclists, tricycle operators and petty traders around Enuagu Onicha roundabout.
A witness, who pleaded anonymity, told Daily Sun that the gunmen stormed the area in a Toyota Highlander SUV.
“They came to Court Area Okposi before moving to Uburu. They came with a Toyota Highlander SUV. They were, however, intercepted by the police led by the DPO of Ohaozara Police Division, at Umuobuna Uburu, and one of them was gunned down during an exchange of gunshots.
“The gunmen abandoned their vehicle and ran away, but one of them was not lucky as he was shot dead. They did not kill anybody, but they stole phones and a brand new motorcycle at Okposi. The phone was later recovered inside the Toyota Highlander SUV. They also moved to Onicha Igboeze, where they chased away motorcyclists, tricycle operators and traders,” he said.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ebonyi Command, Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the incident.
She said: “We just got the report of the incident. We are expecting the DPO of that area command for details. As soon as that is done, you will hear from us.”
