The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a police inspector who shot four persons along Watt Market in Calabar.

The yet-to-be-identified inspector went on a shooting spree in the busy Watt Market area of Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

One of the victims died on the spot, while three were rushed to hospital and are in a very critical condition. An eyewitness said the inspector suddenly rushed out of the Atakpa Police Station, cocked his gun, and began shooting at traders in the market, which is opposite the police station.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident, saying the inspector has been arrested and the situation has stabilised.

“The inspector came back from a night duty and when a police officer comes back from a night duty he is expected to drop his rifle at the station.

“The inspector refused to drop his rifle and was misbehaving.

“The policemen around him tried to calm him down and all of a sudden he ran out and started shooting.

“We have arrested him and presently trying to ensure that the injured people are receiving treatment,” she said.
