The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has confirmed that it has commenced an investigation into the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2 Command, AIG Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, following corruption allegations made by social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).
The Force Headquarters, Abuja, disclosed on Tuesday that the senior police officer has been invited for questioning as part of an internal administrative review, even as the criminal matter linked to the allegations is already before a court of competent jurisdiction.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Ani Iniedu, who made this known in a statement, stressed that while the Police remain committed to investigating all credible allegations, they would not litigate the matter in the media or allow public campaigns to influence the judicial process.
According to the statement, “The Nigeria Police Force notes recent public statements and social media commentary by Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), concerning the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 2, Lagos, and an ongoing criminal matter. The Force wishes to place the following facts on record and clarify the status of both the judicial and administrative processes involved.”
The Police explained that the criminal matter referenced by VDM had already been investigated and forwarded to a court based on legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
“As the matter is sub judice, its adjudication rests solely with the judiciary. The Force will not try this case in the media, nor will it allow its outcome to be shaped by public campaigns or commentary seeking to prejudge the officers or parties involved,” the statement added.
On the administrative aspect of the case, the Police confirmed that the Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) had invited AIG Jimoh for questioning over the allegations.
The statement further revealed that the Force CID, Abuja, on July 30, 2026, also issued a formal invitation to VeryDarkMan, asking him to appear before investigators and provide evidence to substantiate the allegations he made publicly.
According to the Force, both actions demonstrate its commitment to ensuring accountability irrespective of an officer’s rank or the status of the complainant.
“These steps reflect the Force’s standing commitment to investigate all credible allegations of misconduct, regardless of the rank of the officer involved or the public profile of the complainant, through its established channels, including the Force CID, the Force Complaint Response Unit and, where applicable, the Office of the Inspector-General of Police,” the statement said.
The Police further noted that discipline within the Force is guided by the Constitution, the Police Act 2020, Police Regulations, Force Orders and other administrative procedures, stressing that the rules apply equally to every officer.
While affirming the constitutional right of Nigerians to demand accountability and express their opinions, the Force cautioned against defamation and the spread of unverified allegations.
“Freedom of expression does not extend to defamation or the amplification of unsubstantiated allegations as a means of compelling disciplinary outcomes outside due process. Allegations must be formally submitted, investigated and objectively assessed.”
The statement added that any officer found culpable after investigation would be sanctioned in accordance with the law, while individuals found to have made false and malicious allegations could also face legal consequences.
The Police urged VeryDarkMan to honour the invitation extended by the Force CID and cooperate with investigators while allowing the ongoing judicial process to run its course.
Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism and accountability, the Force maintained that no officer is above the law and no genuine complaint would be ignored.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains an institution founded on law, discipline and accountability. No officer is above the law, and no genuine complaint is ignored; nor will any officer be sanctioned outside the procedures the law prescribes. The Force reaffirms its commitment to professionalism, transparency and the impartial administration of justice in the discharge of its constitutional mandate,” the statement concluded.
