The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed an attack on St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Katchuan Iruan, Boki Local Government Area, describing the incident as an act of arson.

Spokesman of the command, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the attack occurred around 3am on Thursday when suspected arsonists invaded the church premises and set parts of the property ablaze.

According to him, the fire destroyed all church records kept in the sacristy, while the attackers also burnt a Lexus 350 Jeep belonging to the priest and a Toyota Corolla parked within the compound.

“No suspect has been identified at this time. Efforts are ongoing to ascertain those responsible for the unfortunate criminal act,” Eitokpah said.

He assured residents that the command would keep the public informed of developments. “Should any suspect be identified, this will be made known to the public,” he added.

The police spokesman disclosed that officers had visited the scene, taken photographs and documented the incident before referring the case to Okunde Police Station for discreet investigation.

The attack has raised concerns among residents of the community, with authorities pledging to intensify efforts to track down those behind the early morning assault on the church.
