Bende town, headquarters of Bende local government headquarters of Abia State was soaked in tension over the weekend as residents engaged in massive protest following the death of a suspect at the Bende police station headquarters.

It was gathered that the police had invited one Wisdom Akobundu for interrogation following alleged complaint brought against him that he bought stolen goods from scanvengers.

It was reported that while in police custody, in an attempt to extract information, police officers brutalized him and he slumped and became unconscious.

The police men were said to have attempted reviving the suspect, but when they could not, they took him to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia where he was confirmed dead.

When youths of Bende got the news of the death of Akobundu, they converged and trooped to the police station, demanding that the police officers involved in the death of the suspect should be brought out to explain why they decided to kill the young man.

In an attempt to stop the angry youths from gaining entry into the police station, the police men were said to have resorted to shooting sporadically into the air to scare the youths away.

This forced people in the area to scamper for safety, even as vehicles
heading to Bende and Ohafia made detours.

The Police Commissioner, Danladi Isa had visited the area. While sympathizing with the Bende people over the unfortunate incident, he disclosed that the policemen who were involved in the act have been arrested and handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Umuahia, the state capital, for interrogation and proper investigation on the matter.

He promised to hand over those found culpable to the court for prosecution as soon as investigation was concluded.
