The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old student of the University of Cross River State, UNICROSS, in connection with a viral video showing suspected cult members firing shots sporadically from a moving vehicle in Calabar.
The arrest followed the circulation of the video, which captured the incident in the early hours of September 17, 2026.
The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Ajo Ordue subsequently ordered immediate identification and arrest of those involved.
ASP Sunday Eitokpah, the Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer in a statement said following the directive, at about 11:30 p.m. on September 17, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and operatives of the Violence Crime Response Unit, VCRU, launched an intelligence-led operation that led to the tracking of the vehicle in the viral footage.
According to him, “The driver was first arrested, and information obtained led operatives to a hotel in Calabar where the key suspect was apprehended.
” Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly claimed to be a leader of a cult group and allegedly admitted to being the person seen firing shots in the video.
“He told police that he was participating in a sign-out activity on the day of the incident and that the pistol allegedly used was handed to him by another suspected member of the group”, the State Police spokesman said.
The Police Command said efforts have been intensified to arrest other persons connected with the incident, while investigation into how the firearm was obtained and how the vehicle moved across the metropolis is ongoing.
He added that the Commissioner has directed that the investigation be thorough and professional, with all persons found to have participated in or facilitated the act brought to justice.
The Command warned against unlawful discharge of firearms in public places and urged residents to report suspicious movements, possession of firearms and cult-related activities to the nearest police station.
