We did it under the influence of alcohol – suspects claim
From Femi Folaranmi, Yenagoa
The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested three suspects—Kadi Bae, Becky, and Miracle—in connection with a viral assault video, following a manhunt ordered by Commissioner of Police, Alonyenu Francis Idu. The arrests address public concerns over the alleged release of the ring-leader, Kadi Bae, with the police confirming that she and two others are in custody, while a fourth suspect, Favour, remains at large.
The suspects are being investigated for indecent assault, attempted murder, grievous hurt, abduction, cyberbullying, and cyberstalking against 19-year-old Nancy Wilfred. Investigations followed an exploratory interactive session with Nancy and engagements with civil society groups and gender advocacy organisations. A tip-off from the public led to the arrest of the three suspects.
Speaking at the police headquarters in Yenagoa, Commissioner Idu said the parade of the suspects demonstrates the police’s commitment to their promise to apprehend the culprits. He commended the public for providing information that facilitated the arrests and noted ongoing efforts to capture the fourth suspect. Idu identified the three in custody as the enforcer of the brutality, the person who recorded the video, and the individual who lured Nancy to the venue.

He stated, “The Police are investigating indecent assault, attempted murder, grievous hurt, abduction, cyberbullying, cyberstalking and ancillary crimes,” adding that the judiciary would take over upon completion of the investigation. Idu praised Bayelsa Governor Senator Douye Diri and his wife, Dr Mrs Gloria Diri, for their support in uncovering the crime.
Addressing reports of a police officer from Zone 16 shielding the suspects, Idu dismissed them as an attempt to distract the command. “It was an attempt to distract the command from focusing on the investigation of the crime. But as you can see, we were not distracted; we were focused. And we located all the suspects but one,” he said.
Kadi Bae, speaking on behalf of the suspects, expressed regret, attributing their actions to alcohol and peer pressure. At the police headquarters, where the parade occurred, two women claiming to be the mothers of Kadi Bae and Miracle were seen crying profusely as their daughters were led back to their cells at the State Criminal Investigation Department.
