Police arrest fake doctor in A/Ibom

Akwa Ibom state Police Command said it has apprehended a fake opthalmologist identified as Gabriel Gideon from Nsit Ubium local government area for allegedly administering unapproved substances to patients in Ikot Abasi  Itam and Nung Ikot Itam communities , Itu local government area of the state. 

A statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer ( PPRO) DSP Timfon John and made available to Journalists in Uyo at the weekend stated that the fake doctor was arrested following a tip off from concerned residents of the area who complained about a man treating eye patients with unapproved concoctions .

The statement reads in parts :
” A fake medical doctor who parades himself as an ophthalmologist has been arrested for allegedly administering a mixture of unapproved substances to hundreds of people in Ikot Akpan Itam, Ikot Abasi Itam, and Nung Ikot Itam in Itu LGA.

” On Thursday, August 14, 2025, at approximately 12:05 PM, Operatives of the Command received a tip from a concerned citizen regarding a man who was reportedly treating eye defects with unapproved substances. The suspect, identified as Gabriel Gideon from Nsit Ubium, was apprehended”.

John said the suspect confessed to not being a qualified ophthalmologist.

She said the suspect allegedly assembled over 300 people in each village, charging them ₦500 to administer a concoction of olive oil, juice, and water as a cure for various eye conditions.

“A medical team from the Ministry of Health confirmed the nature of the unapproved substances.

“Investigation into the matter is ongoing”. She said
