The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 45-year-old man, Tony Amaechi, in connection with an alleged case of obtaining money under false pretence involving N2.5 million.
According to the police, the arrest followed a month-long investigation into a complaint filed at the Igbesa Police Division in April 2026.
Speaking during an interview, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the incident occurred on April 1, 2026, when the complainant, who deals in the purchase and resale of deep freezers, responded to an online advertisement for the sale of the goods.
The complainant subsequently contacted the person behind the advertisement and, after discussions, transferred N2.5 million into a bank account bearing the name Abdulmoruf Abdulahi for the purchase of the deep freezers.
However, the goods were allegedly not delivered, while the person with whom the complainant had been communicating subsequently stopped responding to her messages.
Following the development, the complainant reported the matter at the Igbesa Police Division on April 4, 2026, prompting detectives to commence an investigation.
The investigation eventually led detectives to the suspect, who was traced to the Ishashi area of Ojo, Lagos State. He was arrested on September 22, 2026.
The police said a search conducted during the arrest led to the recovery of 25 Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards, allegedly bearing the name Abdulmoruf Abdulahi; 25 mobile phones of different makes; and 16 SIM cards registered in different names.
According to the police, the items are believed to have been used in activities connected with the alleged fraudulent transactions.
In his response, Amaechi reportedly gave a different account of how some of the items recovered from him came into his possession.
He claimed that the ATM cards were obtained from individuals he described as “crossers” at the Seme border, whom he said were involved in bringing second-hand goods into the country.
He further claimed that some of the SIM cards belonged to him, while the mobile phones were sourced from Alaba International Market and, in some cases, purchased from Germany.
