The Imo State Police Command says it has arrested 104 suspected criminals in the last two months and rescued three victims unharmed during coordinated raids across the state.
The Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Garba Bosso, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Owerri on Wednesday.
According to CP Bosso, operatives carried out a major raid in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area, where three kidnapped victims were rescued unhurt.
He said the operation also led to the discovery of a criminal armoury hidden in a swampy forest in the area. An armourer described as a hunchback was arrested at the site.
Items recovered from the forest include seven magazines, AK-47 rifles, a quantity of live cartridges and charms, the commissioner said.
In another operation, police raided a suspected hideout at Umueneme in Owerri West Local Government Area. CP Bosso said members of the Vikings confraternity were holding an initiation ceremony at the location.
During the raid, police discovered the decomposed corpse of a member who was said to have died during the initiation. Investigations revealed that the site had previously been used as a kidnappers’ den.
CP Bosso urged residents of the state to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movement to the police to help sustain the gains recorded in the fight against crime.
