The Project Management Institute (PMI) has launched a free five-hour online course to help aspiring and early-stage entrepreneurs plan their businesses, manage costs and sustain growth.

The course, “PMI Foundations: Project Management for Entrepreneurs,” is open to founders, content creators, sole operators, community innovators and small teams, with no formal business or project management experience required.

PMI’s Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, George Asamani, said entrepreneurs needed practical skills to turn opportunities into sustainable income.

“Project management helps them plan that work and use their resources wisely,” he said.

He cited findings from the Africa Creator Economy Report 2.0, which showed that about six in 10 respondents earned less than $100 monthly from creative work, while 71 per cent identified business strategy and management as essential to attracting investment.

Asamani said irregular income, uncertain payment dates and production costs made financial planning particularly important for creators.

“For a creator, accepting a campaign may mean paying an editor or hiring equipment before payment arrives. Planning costs and understanding cash flow can help them assess whether they can afford to take on the work and what they will need to deliver it,” he said.

The course covers readiness and resources, financial planning, organising work, testing ideas with customers, building visibility and trust, measuring results, leadership and sustainable growth.

It combines practical templates, reflection exercises, insights from experienced founders and AI-supported brainstorming, allowing learners to choose their learning paths.

“We want entrepreneurs across sectors to have access to practical skills that help them keep their commitments, work through uncertainty and make informed choices about growth,” Asamani said.

Interested entrepreneurs can enrol through PMI’s website.
