Dare Dairo, General Manager, Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LACODA) has enjoined persons with persons with disability to work together as group, identify, synergise with organisations that will further help to promote their cause.

Dairo stated this during the Policy Dialogue for Adoption of the Local Government Disability Framework organised  by Hope Inspired Foundation for Women and Youth with Disabilities (HIFWYD), which held at LCCI Hall, Alausa Ikeja.

He says“ Persons with disabilities need to understand what they want from the government by asking for endowment or empowerment that are beneficial to them.

“ There are basics that we need to do that needs improvement and as things get better, we need to learn how to articulate our needs because that is always been the process of government all over the world because there is always the push and pull between government and the governed.

Janet Adekunle, Executive Director, Hope Inspire Foundation for Women and Youths with Disabilities in her welcome address said “At the national level, we do have policy framework with persons with disabilities and it has been adopted in 20 states as well and Lagos State is one of the leaders of any issue related with people with disabilities.

“ The challenge is that often times these policies are not cascaded down to the local government level and the majority of the women and youths with disabilities are more in touch with their local government level than at the state or federal level.

“ It is therefore important that we have framework that are available at the local government level and they are functional and there are dedicated teams that are available to facilitate the implementation of these policies and framework.

“ It is important that we take actions and  stakeholders should take up the baton and run with it which will enable us experience more progress in the coming years.

Theophilus Adaodo, Executive Director,  Disabilities Right International, a participant we know that the local government is structured and it is the closed to the people and people actually make more impact at the grass root level because of the level of participation at the local government level.

The ides about this persons with disabilities inclusion is one that everybody because they are members of the societies and they have their own families. This is something that benefits our immediate environment so that we can take part because disability can come at any stage in life. Disability framework that has been developed is a very good document that will serve as a guide on how to do the work.

As we participate in this workshop, let our conversation not end here but we will take it to our various places of work and be the voices of people with disabilities.

Janet Adekunle, Executive Director, Hope Inspire Foundation for Women and Youths with Disabilities
