At least nine people were killed and several others injured in a violent attack on Wereng Camp community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State on Wednesday night, May 14.
The assailants, described as gunmen, struck at 9:00 pm, burning nearly all houses in the community and carting away foodstuffs.
Barrister Solomon Dalyop, National President of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), confirmed the attack, stating that the gunmen, who arrived in large numbers, began shooting into the air to announce their presence, forcing residents to flee in different directions.
“The attackers… attacked victims from house to house while also setting fire to their homes,” Dalyop said in a statement.

Despite attempts by some residents to defend the community, they were overwhelmed by the attackers’ superior firepower.
The assault, which lasted over two hours, left nine dead, mostly children and the elderly, with virtually all homes torched. Efforts to reach Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, for comment were unsuccessful.
This attack follows a pattern of violence in Riyom, with similar incidents reported in April and earlier years, often attributed to suspected Fulani militias.
