… PDP remains strong – Jang
From Jude Owuamanam, Jos
The stage is set for an epic battle for the soul of Plateau state between Governor Caleb Mutfwang, and his godfather, Senator Jonah Jang as the former finally picked up an All Progressive Congress (APC)membership card.
He immediate declared his commitment to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
Jang, on the other hand, said Mutfwang’s defection won’t affect the fortunes of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and reiterated his commitment to the ideals of the part
Mutfwang at his formal defection was issued with APC membership card with number 311110100001.
Speaking shortly after the membership card was issued to him at the Government House Little Ray Field on Friday in Jos, Plateau State, Governor Mutfwang said since he met the president in 2023, he had not hidden his belief in the leadership style of Mr. President.
He said, “One thing I declared to Mr. President when I first met him on the 3rd of June, 2023, is that I am committed to his presidency and committed to his re-election. Today, I want to affirm that I am a believer in his leadership.”
The governor implored those who are skeptical about his defection to the APC to be patient with him and the system, adding that as time goes on, things will be normalized and take proper shape.
“To the skeptics, I say: be patient; time will reveal everything. To the fearful, I say: take courage. The journey we are embarking upon is a journey of faith, and God is in the boat of those who trust Him.
“I believe that Plateau will be the leader of this union. And those who are left behind in the PDP are not my enemies. They are my friends and my brothers. I believe that even as we journey to 2027, they may not be happy that I left, but I know they are committed to the project we started together.”
He promised to continue to hold all those who have contributed in one way or another to his political career in high esteem and in a high degree of respect, adding that he will never forget anyone irrespective of political affiliation.
“So I want to call on you: this ship we are entering today has enough room for everyone. Just as you have accorded me all the privileges of a member of this party, I want you to know that I will provide leadership that gives everybody space to express themselves.

“We will respect our elders, we will cherish our women, we will encourage our young people, and all disadvantaged groups—we will make sure we carry everyone along,” he promised.
State Chairman of the APC, Hon. Rufus Bature, speaking while issuing, the membership card to the governor, said the party is blessed to have the governor as a member of the party, adding that the event marked a significant event that will be recalled in the annals of history of Plateau in years to come.
He therefore declared, “Having fulfilled all the requirements of the party constitution, we accord to you all the privileges as enshrined in the APC Constitution. Your card number is APC 311110100001.”
But the Mutfwang’s defection didn’t go down with his godfather, former governor Jonah Jang, who reiterated the unity of PDP in Plateau despite Mutfwang’s dumping of the party.
In a statement signed by his Media Consultant, Clinton Garuba, Jang said that had noted the Mutfwang’s decision to withdraw from the PDP and join the APC, in light of his personal commitment to purposeful leadership and service delivery, as reflected in the resignation notice.
Jang disclosed that Mutfwang had earlier informed him of his desire to join the ruling All Progressive Party, insisting that it is in the interest of the State.
In the statement, Garuba quoted Jang as saying, “I joined the State PDP leadership to reassure members, supporters, and the general public that the party remains stable, liberal, and firmly positioned to continue playing its vital role in Nigeria’s democratic development.
“The party will also continue to engage constructively with its members and remain dedicated to strengthening internal democracy while advancing policies and programs that promote inclusive governance and national development.
“PDP members and supporters are enjoined to remain confident and committed.
To Governor Mutfwang Jang wished him well in his future endeavors, saying, “As his father, my doors are always open whenever he seeks counsel.
Jang urged him to remain focused on serving the people of Plateau State and to work toward the betterment of the Plateau people who voted him to power, because ultimately, power lies in their hands.
To all those who will join the Governor on his new political path, Jang charged them to put the interests of Plateau above party or other parochial interests, hoping that, in the end, Plateau will be the ultimate beneficiary of the political gladiators’ actions.
