Seven traders have been injured after gunmen opened fire on a vehicle conveying market traders along the Bukuru Expressway in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the incident yesterday, saying the traders were returning from Kara Market in Bukuru when the attackers opened fire on their vehicle.

The shooting occurred at about 4:30pm on Sunday, October 4, along the Bukuru Expressway.

In a statement issued in Jos, the command’s spokesman, SP Alfred Alabo, said preliminary investigation showed that the attackers targeted the vehicle conveying the traders.

Following the attack, the Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, CP Ayodeji Faniyan, directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Department of Investigations to take over the probe.

The police said the officer was mandated to ensure that those behind the attack were identified, arrested and prosecuted.

The command condemned the attack and wished the injured traders a quick recovery.

It also said Tactical Teams and Anti-Robbery Teams had been deployed to strengthen security around the area, while intelligence gathering had been intensified to track down the perpetrators.

“The Command strongly condemns this dastardly act and wishes the injured victims a quick recovery,” the statement added.

The police urged residents to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities while reporting suspicious movements or activities to the command.

The command also provided emergency control room numbers, 07059473022 and 08038907662, for residents to report incidents or seek police assistance.
