The Plateau State Ministry of Education has reminded principals and school proprietors of the active ban on non-transferable textbooks, flamboyant graduation ceremonies, and the wearing of academic gowns.
The ministry, in a statement signed by the Director of Quality Assurance, Sebastian John, on behalf of the commissioner, stated that the reminder followed a stakeholders’ engagement meeting held on August 28, 2025.
The meeting resolved to ban the use of non-transferable textbooks and lavish ceremonies in nursery, primary, and secondary schools across the state.
To reinforce the policy, the Plateau State House of Assembly passed a resolution during its plenary session on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, banning the practices. The resolution was subsequently signed into law by Governor Caleb Mutfwang.
In line with the directive, the ministry warned that any school found violating the regulations would face severe sanctions.
According to the ministry, penalties would include immediate closure of the defaulting institution and the withdrawal of its operating licence.
The statement added that monitoring teams from the Ministry of Education have already been deployed across the state to ensure strict compliance and enforcement.
The ministry urged parents, proprietors, and school authorities to cooperate fully with the directives.
