Peter Obi lauds rescue of abducted Oyo pupils, teachers

Oyo pupils and teachers rescued

The presidential candidate of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, has lauded Friday’s safe rescue of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State, describing their release as “worthy of thanksgiving”.

The former Anambra governor made this known in a statement released on Saturday.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga had disclosed in an X post on Friday evening that the abductees were rescued after security personnel arrested eight of the kidnappers and eliminated others.

He added that the rescue operation was conducted without any concession to the terrorists.

Daily Sun earlier reported that the victims were rescued on their 57th day in captivity, having been forcefully taken from three schools in Yawota and Esiele communities in Oriire local government area of Oyo State.

Reacting to the development, Obi said he was “greatly relieved and delighted to learn of the safe rescue of the schoolchildren who were kidnapped.”

He added, “I sincerely thank all those whose tireless efforts made their freedom possible, especially the security personnel and everyone who worked behind the scenes.”

While celebrating the rescue, Obi stressed that such incidents should not occur.

“While we celebrate this happy outcome, we must remember that no child should ever have to endure such trauma. The recurring incidents of kidnapping, particularly of schoolchildren, underscore the urgent need to strengthen our security architecture and make the protection of lives and property the foremost responsibility of government,” the 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP) stated.

Obi noted that children deserve to learn without fear.

“Our children deserve to learn in an atmosphere of safety, not fear. We must continue to work towards building a Nigeria where every child can pursue education without the threat of violence or abduction,” he said.

He also rejoiced with the victims and their families on the safe return.

“I rejoice with the children, their families, their schools, and all Nigerians on this heartening development,” he said.
