After weeks of exciting football, Pyramids FC emerged champions in the Captain Pepple Open Football Tournament.
The final clash of the month-long tournament, which drew enthusiastic support from residents and football lovers throughout the competition brought together youths, families and residents from across Old Port Harcourt Township, creating an atmosphere of healthy competition, friendship and community spirit.
The competition featured 16 teams from across the township, namely Tammy Prime FC, Yam Zone United, Graceland FC, Blessed FC, AMA FC, Division 2 FC, Selected Stars FC, Super Strikers FC, Winners Golden FC, Paul United, Hollando FC, MCWJEF Soccer Academy, Sporting FC, Ambassadors FC, Terony United and Pyramids FC.
In his remarks before the kick-off of the tournament, Captain Stanley Pepple, indicated that football is more than a game to him, stating that he sees it more as a tool for restoring unity, discovering young talents and giving hope to the next generation.
“As someone who grew up in Old Port Harcourt Township, I have always believed in the potential of our young people. This tournament was created to bring them together, promote peace, encourage discipline and give them opportunities to pursue their dreams through sports,” he said.
Pepple, who is the Chief Pilot, Department of Aviation, Rivers State Government, said the tournament was inspired by his desire to give young people a positive platform to showcase their talents while strengthening the bond among communities.
According to Captain Pepple, the response from the community exceeded expectations, with people from different backgrounds coming together daily to support the teams and celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship.
He noted that beyond the excitement on the football pitch, the tournament has rekindled unity and reminded residents of the power of working together.

“The greatest achievement is not just the football itself but the unity it has created. Families are coming together, young people are building friendships, and communities are reconnecting in ways that strengthen our shared identity,” Pepple added.
He described sports as one of the most effective ways to engage young people positively, saying football teaches discipline, teamwork, leadership and resilience while opening doors to education, careers and personal development.
According to him, several talented players attracted attention during the competition, demonstrating that grassroots football can create life-changing opportunities when given the right support.
Looking ahead, Captain Pepple said his vision is to grow the tournament into one of the leading grassroots football competitions in Rivers State and eventually across the Niger Delta.
He explained that future editions will focus on expanding participation, improving facilities and attracting partnerships with football clubs, scouts and sponsors to help more young people achieve their dreams.
He also encouraged youths to remain focused and never allow their background to limit their aspirations.
“There is greatness in every young person. Stay disciplined, work hard and believe in yourself. With determination and the right opportunities, you can achieve remarkable things,” he said.
Residents have continued to commend the initiative, describing it as a platform that not only entertains but also promotes peace, youth development and stronger community ties.
As the tournament continues to grow, the Captain Pepple Open Football Tournament is emerging as a symbol of unity, hope and opportunity for the people of Old Port Harcourt Township, while providing a valuable stage for young football talents to showcase their abilities.
