The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Fatai Tijani, has attributed the peaceful security atmosphere being enjoyed in the state to the sacrifices, cooperation and commitment of stakeholders, particularly security agencies and residents.
Tijani said the collaboration between security agencies and members of the public through community policing was yielding positive results, stressing that all hands must remain on deck to sustain the peace.
The CP stated that security could not be sustained by the government and security agencies alone, but required the deliberate participation and cooperation of the communities they were entrusted to protect.
Fatai made the observation at a stakeholders’ meeting hosted by Area ‘E’ Command of the Lagos State Police Command, where community leaders and other stakeholders gathered to discuss their shared responsibility in keeping their neighbourhoods safe.
The commissioner noted that government intervention had contributed significantly to strengthening security across Lagos State, while commending the dedication and commitment of security agencies in confronting the challenges of public safety.
He, however, stressed that sustaining the progress would require communities to become active partners in the state’s security architecture rather than passive beneficiaries.
According to him, a safer Lagos must be built through a conscious and collective effort, with residents playing their part in making their communities less vulnerable to crime and disorder.
He maintained that security works best when it becomes an integral part of the civic life of a community, urging residents to provide useful information to security agencies and support efforts aimed at preventing crime.
The message was echoed by the Chairman of Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, Prince Lanre Sanusi, who described security, safety and welfare as responsibilities that extend across the entire community.
Sanusi said that as neighbourhoods continued to evolve and the demands on security agencies remained substantial, the safest communities would ultimately be those where residents regarded public safety not as someone else’s responsibility, but as their own.
He said everyone, from young people and traditional rulers to Community Development Associations and other local stakeholders, had a role to play in maintaining peace and security.

According to him, the responsibility could not simply be handed over to the police and other security agencies and forgotten.
The stakeholders also commended the Area ‘E’ Commander, ACP Chike Oti, whom they described as a firm believer in community policing.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command has received 2,000 Cowry Cards from the Lagos State Government to support the transportation needs of police personnel serving across the state.
The cards were presented by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Lagos State on Transportation and Logistics, Hassan Adekoya, to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, who was represented by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Lagos, AIG Simeon Akpanudom.
The initiative, provided under the Lagos State Government’s transportation support programme, will enable the 2,000 police beneficiaries to enjoy three months of free transportation on designated Lagos State Government transport services, including the BRT, Electric Boats, Blue Line and Red Line.
Thereafter, the beneficiaries will enjoy a 50 per cent fare discount.
While conveying the warm appreciation of the Inspector-General of Police, AIG Akpanudom commended the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for the initiative and his sustained support for police welfare through various interventions.
He noted that the gesture would ease the transportation burden on police personnel, serve as a morale booster and further strengthen the existing partnership between the Lagos State Government and the Nigeria Police Force in promoting public safety, security and good governance.
In a statement, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said CP Fatai assured that the Cowry Cards would be distributed to deserving officers in a fair and transparent manner.
He added that the cards would be used strictly for the purpose for which they were provided, without abuse or misuse.
Fatai, the statement added, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and accountability while deploying all available resources towards ensuring a safer Lagos for all residents.
